Basic engineering method

There are many types of geotechnical drilling around the world that are considered to be similar to the construction of buildings such as buildings or oil rigs. It is used during the construction process and as part of the early pre-construction process of the field connection before the construction of the structure. This procedure is typically performed by an organization specializing in geotechnical drilling services where geotechnical engineers supervise operations still in place to ensure drilling in accordance with project specifications. These companies can also perform other services depending on size and location.

A common cause of geotechnical drilling is field investigations. A site survey determines if a particular location is appropriate for the action to be performed. This will include drilling to remove rock and soil samples, as well as trying to assess whether the soil is stable and other possible problems. This is often referred to as basic engineering and is divided into several categories. The foundation is the lowest and support layers of the structure, usually divided into two categories: shallow foundations and deep foundations.

An important stage of drilling and basic investigations can be critical when you have large structures. Unsafe soil or rock conditions can cause structural collapse and even dangerous conditions during an earthquake or flood. Most state laws typically require investigations prior to the issuance of a permit and ensure ongoing security monitoring to detect any possible changes that may pose a threat to operations.

A common method for determining structural integrity is referred to as Cross Hole Sonic Logging or [CSL], which is a very useful method for testing drilled shafts and other concrete piles. Tests have shown that this method is considered to be more accurate than the acoustic echo test when determining the structural sound in the concrete within the bore in the reinforcement cage. This advanced test method uses acoustic wave propagation theory to examine the quality and integrity of newly placed drilled shafts, seal foundations and mud or diaphragm walls and other structures. It is becoming more and more popular throughout the industry and offers the following advantages:

  • Affordable, fast
  • Detect the number and location of damage
  • Easily completed with fully portable devices
  • Practice at any depth without losing accuracy
  • Can be used to check maintenance efficiency
  • Increased confidence in the foundation

When considering geotechnical engineering, make sure that the company under consideration provides the services you need, whether it is cross-hole sonic logging or basic engineering.
