This article is the first of a series of comments on the Medea drama by the Athens playwright Euripides [480-404 BC].
background.
In Euripides' one day, modern country Greece does not exist. The consistency of hundreds of independent cities in the Greek world in the 5th century BC spanned the Mediterranean, especially the so-called Greek and Greek islands, Bulgaria, western Turkey, southern Italy, Sicily and southern France. Linking these cities is a common culture [religion, language, origin, story], but with different dialects, political forms and other local differences. Some cities are demolitions, some oligarchic politics and other military dictatorships. Some cities, mainly cities outside of modern Greece, were established as colonies in other cities, and over time these colonies developed their own unique culture. Athens and Sparta are the most powerful cities in Euripides. day. In the years before Euripides', they fought alongside the Persians. Born, but in the 5th century, they began to form alliances with other Greek cities and gradually ruled them. Then there was competition and conflict. Medea was originally produced in 431 BC, only a few months before the outbreak of the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta, in order to remind Euripides' life.
Athens Theatre.
The Athenians did not go to the theatre all year round, they were not purely for entertainment. They hosted a comedy festival in January and a tragedy festival in March or April. Both are major national events of profound religious significance. This traditional festival is known as the city of Dionysus to commemorate the Dionysus, vines and agriculture, and celebrate the arrival of spring and the cultivation of crops. For City Dionysia, three dramatists were invited to perform three tragedies and a porn drama. The latter is a wretched comedy that eases easily after the tragedy. The dramatists will present their plays on successful days, and the production costs will be met by wealthy patrons. A group of judges voted on these plays and awarded prizes to the winners. In 431, BCE Euripides came last. In fact, although he wrote about 90 plays [and therefore must enter the city of Dionysed 30 times], he only won four first prizes, and the last was a post-mortem victory.
After the winter storm, the city of wine gods took place while sailing around the Mediterranean. This means that Athenians can invite representatives of all other Greek cities to demonstrate their cultural [and military] advantages. Therefore, when Medea first performed, the theater was filled with all Athens citizens [free-born males] and their guests. The only women present were some senior priestess. The Athenians ' wife and daughter could have been safely locked in the home of a female dormitory.
Performance.
Medea is located in Corinth, and the tragedies in Athens are generally outside of Athens, so the dramatists can comment on local politics without directly criticizing the city.
An interesting aspect of the Athenian drama is that although the actors are male, many of the central figures are women. For Medea, this is the case, because once the heroine appears, she will dominate the rest of the game. Other female characters are elderly nurses who care for Medea from an early age, know how her thinking works, what her abilities are, and women's chorus. The choir is a sympathizer, advisor, critics and extreme judge of Medea.
The main male characters are Medea's husband Jason; Corinth's Kryon; and King Aegins of Athens. We saw that Medea interacted with these three powerful men in an attempt to shape her own destiny.
People have been arguing about the meaning of drama for two and a half centuries, and recent controversy has often focused on what Euripides is trying to say to women, often expressed as "Is Euripides a feminist or a feminist who hates a woman?"
The answer to this question depends on your contribution to Medea's words and deeds, which we will discuss in the next article.
