FRP Building Products and Design Code

Concrete infrastructure is of great significance when it comes to economic growth in a region. Civil engineering structures should be designed and constructed using satisfactory materials and techniques to maintain a good service life without repair. Durable infrastructure systems such as bridges, highways, water systems, and buildings play a vital role in building a healthy economy. As a result, the demand for cost-effective and non-corrosive building materials has reached unprecedented levels.

Fiber reinforced polymers [FRP], also known as composites, have been used for many years in a variety of sensitive applications where harsh environments are a major concern for structural engineers. The excellent results of FRP materials in civil infrastructure have led most developed countries to move from traditional reinforcement to FRP. The ability to withstand harsh environments and protect reinforced concrete from corrosives makes fiberglass rods and other GFRP building products an irreplaceable alternative to traditional concrete reinforcement technology.

The construction industry relies heavily on design specifications, standards and specifications, so materials can be used accordingly. The development of these new specifications will help structural engineers build durable and secure projects. In addition, the existence of design specifications will pave the way for FRP composites to dominate the market.

Fiberglass reinforcement is probably the most important FRP product and is widely used for concrete reinforcement. GFRP building products include rock bolts, lifting bolts, tendons and shape connectors. The development and unique performance of composite building products have received enthusiastic response from the civil engineering community. With the advent of new design codes and specifications, civil engineers have shown confidence in GFRP building products.

Civil engineers must be aware of the qualitative and quantitative properties of building materials used to construct concrete structures. Design specifications, manuals and specifications do help engineers understand the strength and application of materials.
