Geomantic animal symbolism

The role of real and mythical animals is often mentioned in Feng Shui theory and folklore. In many books, there is an ideal description of the house, with a turtle behind it, a phoenix bird in front, and dragons and tigers on both sides. These four animals symbolize the formation of land and buildings. For example, having a turtle behind the house to support or protect is a metaphor for a larger structure or a mountain of characters. Raising a bird in front symbolizes the formation of smaller lands.

There is a concept that "chi" [airflow] moves around a property, the higher terrain [turtle] behind protects the house, while the smaller terrain [birds] in front helps the house get the proper number of chi. Like the edge of a bowl, the front phoenix helps to support near the entrance to the house or contain energy.

Then, the tigers and dragons on either side of the house represent neighboring houses, buildings or real hills. These forms are a way to protect your home. In a general sense, houses that are not surrounded by other structures or terrestrial structures are somewhat fragile and overexposed to these elements. Some people literally look at the references of these animals, and they will put the figurines of these creatures in their homes for good luck and protection. At least one Feng Shui master I have studied suggests that these animals may also represent the shape of some important constellations.

Another popular feng shui creature is fish. Fish symbolizes the longevity of Chinese culture, so their paintings and sculptures are considered lucky. In the practical application of feng shui, the fish in tanks and ponds are just an excuse to help recycle water. This is water, this is the real remedy. But because feng shui comes from a very superstitious culture, the number of fish and the color of the fish in the aquarium are exaggerated. Similarly, if you see birds flying over or nesting on the roof, different types of birds should be a sign for the occupants.

The image of the horse can not help but symbolize travel and sports. A folk remedy is to place the horse statue facing the door for residents who want to sell the house.

Lions and tigers are considered powerful, ferocious animals. According to people who insist on the treatment of these animals, their performance in pictures or sculptures should be cautious. You may have seen the entrance to a large building or the stone lion on the side of the stairs, but they would think it was exclusive to the home.

One of the twelve zodiac signs in Chinese astrology is the tiger. Women who are symbols of tigers are considered to be very independent and more difficult to settle with men. February is the month of the tiger. According to auto insurance statistics, there were more car accidents in February. This is consistent with the Chinese explanation that fast-moving tigers are also prone to accidents.

It is worth noting that there are some cultural differences in our relationship with animals. For example, in Chinese astrology, a person born in the Year of the Rat can be a very intelligent person, and a snake man can easily be interested in metaphysics and spirituality. In the West, we think that mice and snakes are sneaky and indulgent. In some religions, people believe that everyone has lived at least one incarnation because we have an unconscious understanding of the individuality and superiority of these animals.

Some birds are more monogamous than people, so there is a notice that placing photos of love birds in the bedroom will appeal to true love. These things can be used as a placebo, but are not considered to be the most complex feng shui remedies.

Elephants have a reputation for attracting wealth in Chinese and Indian culture. The image of the trunk elephant often decorates people's homes, hoping that elephants will become their lucky image.

There are more animals that have meaning and/or feng shui-specific meaning in Chinese culture. It is said that a metal cock placed in a proper position can prevent someone from committing adultery. Out of the background, these animal symbols look strange, but they are no strangers to our meaning for some inanimate objects in the Western world. Whether it is the national flag, car engine decorations, designer brands or religious symbols, we will pay attention to many symbols that are not noticed or undiscovered in other cultures.

Many people were surprised to find that I did not use any of these animal symbols as feng shui remedies. Although I understand the psychological relief they may provide, I don't think these symbols can change the energetic composition of the room. Because the symbols are extremely personal [like our dreams], I don't know how they work for everyone in the same way.
