Medical Transcription - Ethics

Health care is an essential service, as well as other basic necessities such as air, water, food, clothing and housing. Therefore, healthcare practices require health care professionals and other entities associated with healthcare to adhere to strict ethics.

Medical transcription is closely related to the healthcare industry in terms of business and operations by documenting patient-health professionals.

The Healthcare Document Integrity Association [AHDI] has developed guidelines for codes of conduct for healthcare document professionals. The ethics of medical transcription professionals are as follows:


  1. Maintain confidentiality of all patient information, including but not limited to peer review, quality improvement and risk management protocols, with special efforts to maintain data security in electronic communications.

  2. Implement and maintain standards for professional transcription practices. Respect the rights and dignity of all.

  3. Continue to develop professional growth, enhance knowledge and skills, including continuing education, connect with colleagues, professional reading and certification.

  4. Strive to provide accurate and timely information

  5. Maintain integrity in professional practice, including work or professional experience, certification, affiliation, productivity reporting, billing and payment practices.

  6. Comply with all laws, regulations and standards governing the practice of patient documentation.

  7. Promote the employment environment and promote the integrity, professionalism and protection of patient information.

  8. Strive to promote the goals and objectives of the association and strive to promote and develop the profession.

These are guidelines for ethical guidelines developed by AHDI for members of the association. However, these ethical guidelines can be used as a guide by all entities involved in the medical transcription business.

According to ethical guidelines, medical transcription service providers must operate their businesses:


  • Keep the confidentiality of patient information: The confidentiality of patient information should be maintained at all levels. Maintain confidentiality of data at all stages, during transmission, during use, and during storage using appropriate measures

  • Implement and maintain professional transcription standards: Service providers should maintain and implement professional transcription standards by rigorously training one or two professional transcriptionists to achieve standards of accuracy and turnaround time.

  • Continuously improve the skills of medical transcriptionists through education: Service providers should educate their team of medical transcriptionists by constantly updating their knowledge base in the medical field.

  • Provide timely information: Service providers should provide timely information if needed.

  • Exercise integrity in billing practice: The billing method should meet all billing method principles that are verifiable, measurable, definable, consistent, and fair and honest.

  • Compliance with patient documentation laws: Service providers need to understand and comply with all laws applicable to patient documentation

  • Develop appropriate professional and ethical atmosphere: Service providers need to create an atmosphere that creates a professional atmosphere.

While outsourced medical transcription services should take service providers, they are not only able to provide accurate transcription services in a timely manner, use the right technology, through safe means and at reasonable prices, but also follow ethical recommendations. AHDI.
