Short story by William H Colles

William Coles' 2000-2016 short story brings together 33 short stories, a novella and two graphic novels. The illustrations enhance each story and complement the reader's experience and understanding. Peter Healy brilliantly presented two graphic novels, which are recapitulations of the series of previous short stories.

The characters and themes in this book are unique. Although they share the connection between human struggle and moral issues, they are not intertwined. Through these stories, a lot of information is taught, including non-traditional love, acceptance, stereotypes, pain, faith, death, birth, family values and narcissism. Most of the stories are dark and the ending is tragic. Some people offer a glimpse of hope, while others fear it.

I think I can connect to many stories because they accurately depict the world we live in. I want to get more information and personality from some stories; people with more feelings. My favorite two are The Gift and SISTER CARRIE, a novella.

The gift took place in 1959, and the 17-year-old protagonist Catherine recently discovered that she was pregnant. Her father is still full of love and support, but her mother is ashamed of thinking about gossip. Catherine sought advice from her local pastor and arranged for her to "visit" the monastery in southern France. Before Catherine could see, the baby was born and was swept away. However, when she woke up and her friend Maggie cried at the bedside, she knew that something was wrong. Catherine and Maggie began looking for a little girl she liked. In the next few years, we will be able to see our mother's unconditional love and strong support from family and friends. But lurking in the background is an indifferent, distant and not benevolent mother. Everyone will be moved to one side or the other. You can choose whether sympathy or selfishness is the right path.

Sister Carrie is the longest story in this book. As the story grows longer, readers can develop more feelings for the role in the process of the novella. As the story unfolded, we were introduced to Carrie, 17, who was shocked by the sudden death of her parents. Carrie's sister Jesse is the only family member who is willing to take on the responsibility of youth care. Just four months later, Carrie met a young immigrant on the Internet and fell in love. Jesse despised this relationship and made every effort to separate them. Will Carrie insist on this seemingly not normal relationship and support the man she loves? If someone really loves another person, who has the right to say.

Writer William H. Coles has won numerous awards including The Flannery O&#Conntor for Short Fiction and William Faulkner Creative Writing Competition. I highly recommend reading a collection of contemporary short stories by a talented writer.
