What are the benefits of a multi-room audio video system?

The term multi-room audio video simply means providing audio and video sources through the home - the whole house audio and video system.

Place the sources you normally use in the lounge [such as DVD players, CD players, and radio tuners] in a central location to distribute these sources at home. There are many different manufacturers that have the means to get audio and video signals from each room, and they also allow you to control the source just like you are in the same room. Some systems distribute audio through Cat5e cabling, some systems are distributed wirelessly, and some systems run speaker cables from a central location to each room. Our preferred method is to run the speaker cable for the simple reason that it is more economical to install a good multi-channel amplifier in the center than to install a good amplifier in each room, and you have less equipment in the room.

Once you have audio input in the room, you need to control it - again different manufacturers have different methods - the cheaper system will give you a pre-engraved keyboard that allows you to go up and down the channel and change the volume. In contrast, the more expensive system allows you to select channels and see two-way feedback - you can see content such as CD covers and intuitively select music, and you can access all the controls on the Sky remote. It makes sense to install a music server when installing the entire house system. You don't want to access remote cabinets when changing music, and there are also the benefits of streaming multiple CDs - different people can listen to different things in different rooms. The same system can be used for DVDs so that anyone at home can watch the movies of their choice.
