Over the years, I have proposed that classical Feng Shui is a scientific practice. Now, when I teach Feng Shui, Ba Zi and Xiang Xiang at the seminar, I have always supported the view of Feng Shui around the world. So I was very surprised to find that my comments sparked a heated debate about what biological problems Feng Shui is. Is this a scientific practice? fake-science? Or is it pure faith? Therefore, I think I will explore this issue in more depth and explore the scientific aspects of classical Feng Shui.
You must believe in feng shui, so this is not science.
Wait a minute - you must trust your doctor before you go to see him or her. You must also trust your lawyer before you designate him to defend the case. Does this mean that if you don't believe in the doctor's diagnosis, the entire medical science is invalid? of course not.
When people advise that feng shui is not scientific or unscientific, the problem is that people may not understand what science starts with. The word "science" comes from the Latin scientia, which means knowledge. According to Wikipedia, science can be simply defined as "the knowledge of any system or the knowledge gained from it." So how does feng shui measure this definition?
There is no doubt that classical feng shui is a systematic field of research: by systematization I mean that it has basic models, basic principles, empirical evidence and the most important record observations. It did not make up. This is not today, tomorrow. This is not a logical explanation.
How do scientists draw scientific conclusions? They conduct experiments, observe the results, repeat these experiments as necessary to ensure consistent results, and then record their observations. Feng Shui has basic patterns and principles: Five Elements, Yin Yang, and Tu, Luo Shu, the principle of the trinity of the universe is the core principle of Feng Shui and many examples of Chinese metaphysical practice. How is the empirical evidence? This has been accumulating since the Tang Dynasty! The ancient classics not only contain the description of the terrain and the principles of the gas, but also include landscape maps.
Feng Shui's new book and new theory adapt to the modern world we live in and continue to publish and write in Hong Kong and Taiwan. This research and knowledge system is constantly evolving, unlike scientific practices such as medicine and engineering.
In any science, the key component is observation. Feng Shui is an integral part of the landscape and one of the five major art in China. It is called the science of observing the environment. Many of the principles in Feng Shui are the results observed by practitioners since the Tang Dynasty, and then recorded as classics, such as the youth [green bag], Rudi [into the eyes of the earth] and purple and white [purple rhyme] . Some of the classics that form the basis of feng shui research are not the original classics of new ideas, but the elimination of unsuccessful observations and observations that have been made. Feng Shui was not exclusively used by the Empire until the early 20th century. So research is often carried out from one generation to another, without damage or pause. This makes it possible to observe effective and ineffective things over hundreds of years.
Today, although not all Feng Shui masters can claim to be associated with pedigree, those who have extensively and thoroughly documented their cases so that the knowledge systems they collect during their lifetime can be passed on to the next generation, so they may continue to observe the results. And develop a knowledge system.
Science is not just physics, chemistry and biology. This is an extremely narrow scientific concept. Science includes social sciences such as anthropology and sociology, geography [traditionally regarded as the "art" discipline in Malaysia] and applied sciences such as engineering, computer science and psychology.
You can't touch it, you can't see it, how do you measure it?
Many people also pointed out that Feng Shui is difficult to accept as a science because it is impossible to measure gas. Again, this is a flawed perception.
Before Michael Faraday [1831-79], power and magnetic force could not be measured. Does this mean that electricity and magnetic force did not exist before Faraday? Electron microscopy has helped pioneer the field of virology or virus research. But did it mean that the virus did not exist before? Quasars and black holes are not yet practical, but no one does not believe that Stephen Hawking is talking about wormholes in the universe, even if no one really sees how people know how it works, except for Star Trek.
Can you measure your blood pressure with a stethoscope? of course not. We tend to assume that everything in our world and in the universe can be measured by the rulers, test tubes, and electronic devices we read or heard. But if this is the case, there is no need to design special tools for measurement or observation in new areas such as space exploration or quantum mechanics. Until the Hubble telescope, humans studied the stars and the universe through observation. We have to build Hubble. Just like exploring space, we have to build rockets.
So, when we talk about measuring gas, we have to ask: What is this particular type of exercise device? We can't measure it because we don't use the right equipment?
The Chinese already have devices to measure gas. Sun and lunar calendar, compass and observation techniques - study the environment with one eye. Of course, some of us now use Google Earth. You can buy an electronic compass. And drawing Flying Star or Da Gua calculations [methods for quantifying and identifying the type of Qi] can be done electronically with a computer, even a Palm program. So who can say that is not measurable? Simply put, it is impossible to measure through the devices or means that people think is used to measure everything from gas to insects in the universe. After all, you don't need a stethoscope to measure your blood pressure, right?
Art in various sciences
Another debate about Feng Shui is whether it is art or science. Let me throw a suggestion that might be bold: in every science, there is art. I think if you ask a doctor or a dentist, they will definitely tell you that the science they practice has an art. This art is judgment. It is a subtle element, accompanied by knowledge and experience in different situations. Even in the purest science, the Queen of Science, mathematics, there is beauty and aesthetics!
Science only provides us with pure application. Art makes it possible for people trained in scientific practice to decide which technology to apply and under what circumstances they may or may not use technology. The same is true of classical Feng Shui. There are general principles and formulas in Feng Shui. This is science. However, choosing the right example to apply the explanation, or limiting the instance when using the formula, is the art behind science. Similarly, the environment is formed, mountains and water are unique in every environment. Therefore, although they will conform to certain basic rules [for example, the mountains are always on the water] and belong to a series of more complicated rules, how to best utilize and utilize the gas according to the structure [houses, office buildings, resorts]. It is art.
If you consider this in the yin and yang context, this is the basic principle of feng shui and all Chinese metaphysics, which makes sense. Yin and Yang symbolize balance and perfection. Within the scope of science, based on strict principles, there is room for interpretation or artistic application. yin and yang.
Metaphysical thought
Today's metaphysics is sometimes associated with kook practices like occultism, but it ignores the ancient history of metaphysics in the Western world. Aristotle is one of the famous thinkers associated with metaphysics, such as Descartes and Albert Einstein. Western metaphysics is a person with considerable brain cracks. I don't claim to be an expert in the West Square. But a cursory search on the Internet reveals that metaphysicists are interested in the problems that exist [why are we here?], the study of God or God, and the understanding of causality [why it happens], relationships and the universe. It combines reasoning and logic with philosophical thinking.
Classical Feng Shui and Chinese Five Arts have always been considered by Chinese to be the subject of metaphysics - in other words, scientific practice with philosophical existentialism. Metaphysics is a more accurate means of describing feng shui, eight sons and soaring [although this does not detract from its scientific nature], because these scientific practices stem from the Chinese want to understand destiny, the universe, destiny, existence and identity, essentially metaphysical Or a philosophical question. Feng Shui, Ba Zi and Xiang Xiang have philosophical connotations about their scientific discoveries, because they are essentially the science of understanding one's life.
Now, I am a feng shui practitioner and trainer. I am not a philosopher. Of course I am not an expert in metaphysics or science. My goal in this article is to let you know how I came to the conclusion that Feng Shui is a scientific practice. I don't want people to believe my point of view right away, but I believe that understanding the truth is not about one's thoughts, but about opening our thoughts before we reach a conclusion. Inspire the debate, open the door to discussion and come up with other ideas that are part of...
