How to make gray and brown paint using primary colors

It is a challenge for the editor to propose this title, so how can the artist resist it? My first reaction was to wonder why someone would bother when other ways could achieve a more subtle and compatible neutrality. I can imagine how it was done, but I have not tried it in reality. So, still wearing my pajamas, I slipped into the studio this morning and experienced it. Please see your opinion on my results below.

For those readers who are moving towards becoming artists, I will add some definitions to the process we are doing.

  • So what is neutral tones?

Neutral tones: Neutral can be classified as gray or brown in a vulgar manner. In the hands of experienced, they are some extremely subtle blends of colors used in painting. However, they can be made by mixing three Primaries. The following are:

1] Make gray

The easiest way to achieve Gray by mixing three Primaries is to mix the same amount of blue and red to produce a rough purple. A small amount of yellow was added to the mixture until dark gray appeared. To reduce its chromaticity*, you can - very carefully - add a small amount of white.

 What is color?

This value refers to the darkness or brightness of the color.

2] Making Brown

Mix the same amount of blue and yellow to produce a rough green color. A small amount of red is added to the mixture until a suitable brown color is obtained. For example, for the current painting, you may need less intensity Brown or Chroma.

Adding White to your new Brown blend seems obvious. But this will be a huge mistake. Instead, add more yellow.

  • How to avoid making mud

All of these blends should be done on the palette using a palette knife. This is the only way to achieve ' cleaning. Color mixing is essential when you use gray or brown. In the excitement of creating a new painting, it is easy to touch the brush and begin to mix the colors directly onto the canvas. After seeing the contents of a famous artist in a Hollywood movie, you can't remove all the paint from the bristles by wiping the brush on the rag or wiping it with Turkey. The color residue will end up in the new mixture and become a mud.

I advise you to develop the habit of using a brush on the paint, do not mix it.

  • Develop other neutral methods

You can create a more modest neutral color based on the colors used in the current painting. For example, if you are drawing a landscape with a storm cloud above, you might use a mixture of cobalt blue and white in the sky background. If you want Gray to further define these clouds, you can do this:

  • Take some of your cobalt blue, with its supplements* - burnt Sienna mixed - you'll get a mix of gray tones that you can change by mixing some whites.

*What is a complement?

This is the color opposite to Dominant * Hue on the color wheel. For example, the Blue-Purple supplement - or vice versa - is yellow-green.

*What is dominant color?

You guessed it right, right? It is the most widely used color or shade of the painting you are using. So if your painting is portrait and you need to use dark but neutral brown to enhance the hair color of the theme, try the following:

  • Mix red earth, such as Burnt Sienna, which you have used for the skin tone in portraits, with deep blue to make a deep but neutral brown.

When you want to make neutral using Primaries or other means, experimenting is the only way to find the right blend of your personal style and the theme of your choice. Bonuses are fun you will have to do. [C] Dorothy Govin
