WordPress, Joomla (open source) as CMS - why not you?

In 2010, many SMEs hope to be able to update their websites themselves. In the early stages of web design, it is impossible without the knowledge of HTML programming or spending money on content management systems.

Today, content management systems [CMS] are kings. This article provides an argument for why you should use CMS and help you choose which one. It is based on experience and reflects our point of view.

CMS enables customers to update content on the website with easy-to-use forms. Without editing the code, you can add new pages with a few clicks of the button, change the navigation and add text and images yourself. If you want to be able to update your site instead of paying developers, you need a CMS. They are also great for search engines.

Choose CMS

The first decision was to use an open source [ie free] CMS like WordPress or Joomla, or a proprietary CMS built by the company. We have seen both and tested both. After the sales people talked about their proprietary CMS, we haven't seen a product that matches the capacity of open source software. What is the price you pay for using these "substandard" privileges? system.

Why is open source better?

  • Being open source means that anyone can access the source code behind the CMS and can improve it. The best developers in the world do this; thousands of users are providing feedback every day, and frequent new versions of the product are constantly improving
  • Not only can you get CMS for free, but you can also create plugins for CMS. The plugin may be a tool to help the search engine, or it may be an ecommerce module. This saves development time and money because you can download plugins and plug them into your website to extend their functionality.
  • The CMS platform is designed for search engines and can be read to increase your presence on search engines.

If open source is for you, then it's time to choose a system. WordPress and Joomla are market leaders, but there are others. We have used WordPress and Joomla. We found WordPress to be easier to use and great for blogging. Joomla is more complicated, but it works for large websites. You have to do some research to find the content that best suits your needs, but it's worth it.

As CMS becomes the norm through its reach and affordability, building a website on the CMS platform should be a major consideration when building a new website. For more information or to discuss options for the new website, please contact us immediately.
