Ask the expert: interior design

Over the years, as an interior designer, what are the three major changes in consumer preferences during that time?

One thing that comes to mind immediately is the transition from stain-grade cabinets to paint-grade cabinets. The white kitchen is back! In the past decade, customers have become more and more bright with red/orange tones. The floor has changed a lot, and more and more customers choose LVP [luxury vinyl] through their house. LVP has arrived so far, and is now super durable, easy to maintain, and looks crazy. Third, quartz countertops are now becoming the standard. I rarely question the granite anymore. Quartz is easier to maintain than granite, and the colors and patterns available now mimic from natural marble to exotic granite.

What future ideas and predictions are there in the future? Any new trends that may occur in 2018/19 and beyond?

Natural wood is now very popular: hand-scraped, wide planked barn floors and over-distressed furniture. What is also beginning to appear in the design is more traditional style. Details about everything and the use of rich gemstone tones are now very hot, as well as warm metallic tones [the brass is back, but in a newer way!].

What are the challenges in helping customers achieve their dreams?

Many customers can't believe their style intuition. They often compete for the things they want between the heart and the brain. Often, they try to force themselves to change the palette or style of the last house, sometimes even out of the comfort zone. I always tell customers to listen to their instincts. Their home is their refuge, they need to feel comfortable, relax, and like to go home.

Are there certain types of renovations that often bring the greatest value to the price of a home?

Kitchen, suite and basement development is always the most used space for people, so it can increase the value of your home. Those rooms are the main buyers of potential buyers because they know that these are the areas where they will spend the most time.

When thinking about updating options, how do you get ideas or inspiration to help guide them?

I often advise customers to send me photos of the homes, rooms, styles and products they find on the home décor website. Customers don't usually know what their style is, so if they can show me pictures of similar things, then I usually understand them better. Visiting showhomes is also a great way to find inspiration and new ideas.
