what is your hobby? Do you play board games? Are you joking?
When I started to be fascinated by these modern European games, I got a lot of interesting looks from people - including my wife, brothers and sisters. What they don't understand is that there are many underground communities around these games. .
In the past six months or so, I have had to come up with a description that the community affectionately calls Eurogames. They have many names and are generally not known to the public - adult board games. Modern board games, designer games, German games or Ameritrash games. None of them can explain non-gamers well. It really just makes you fall into a deer hole.
You can't answer this way
We don't actually play "board games" as you would like. We are actually playing modern designer games from Europe. They are often quite complex and take hours to play. Usually no one is eliminated, so everyone is really happy. They tend to be more interactive and attractive, yada yada... right. Now their eyes are glazed and you look like a board game snobbery.
You are familiar with monopoly, right?
Touching the nerves is important when introducing the game. Asking about monopoly is often my first reaction to them. This is a game that everyone is familiar with. They know that this is a more complex game than a normal 7-year-old child can handle, with financial responsibility, scarce resources, cards and strategies.
