GRIHA: You need to know India's green rating

Getting a green rating for your home can help you raise your room rate. The GRIHA rating is one of the rating systems you can use in India. Read on to learn about the GRIHA rating system and how to apply.

What is GRIHA?

The green rating of GRIHA or Integrated Habitat Assessment assesses the performance of green households in energy consumption, waste management and renewable energy resource management.

Eligibility to apply for a GRIHA certificate

Any building that covers more than 2,500 square meters at the design stage can apply for a GRIHA certificate. These buildings include residential buildings, offices, institutions, hotels, shopping centers, hospitals, etc., but do not include any industrial units such as factories and factories.

Procedure for applying for a GRIHA certificate

First, you must complete an online registration form to register your property on the GRIHA website. Register at the pre-design stage to clarify any construction issues.

Next, you will need to submit a soft copy of the documentation related to the standard. The final step is the assessment conducted by the Association for Social Life Development and Research [ADaRSH].

How does GRIHA certify buildings

According to the GRIHA system, the ADaRSH team evaluates green homes in India based on 34 criteria and evaluates them on a scale of 1 to 100. The 34 criteria are divided into four sections, each of which deals with specific aspects of building a green home. Each standard has a number of scores for scoring purposes.

1. Site Planning

GRIHA rates green homes at various stages of site planning. This includes site selection, protecting the landscape, protecting the soil, reducing air pollution, and providing workers with adequate sanitation. This section allocates 24 points.

2. Architectural planning and construction stage

The architectural planning and construction phase is the most important standard. This includes regulating water and water quality, optimizing energy demand and building performance, implementing renewable energy systems, and using appropriate waste management systems for environmentally friendly building materials. GRIHA allocated a total of 68 points for this part.

3. Building operation and maintenance

There are only eight points in this phase, including the preparation of an energy audit report and an agreement related to the operation and maintenance of the building infrastructure.

4. innovation

The final standard is innovation. This section assigns four additional points. If you can implement new innovative ideas in alternative transportation modes, environmental education, etc., green homes can earn these bonus points.

GRIHA Star Rating for Green Homes

Green homes require at least 50 points to qualify for GRIHA. Depending on the number of points, the house will receive a specific star rating.
